Tailwind Nutrition is one of the most popular endurance drinks among ultrarunners, gravel cyclists, and bikepackers — for good reason. The brand's pitch is uniquely simple: one scoop, one bottle, one drink that handles fuel, electrolytes, and hydration for the whole hour. No gels, no salt tabs, no second bottle. For long, moderate-intensity events where nutrition logistics are themselves a stressor, that simplicity is genuinely valuable.

Tailwind's flagship Endurance Fuel is a coupled drink at ~25 g of carbs per scoop with a robust ~310 mg sodium dose plus potassium, magnesium, and calcium. A more recent High Carb SKU pushes that to 90 g of carbs per scoop with even more sodium — aimed at the elite end of the carb-intake curve.

What's their formulation philosophy?

The original Tailwind Endurance Fuel is built on a 2:1 glucose-to-fructose ratio achieved by combining sucrose (table sugar — natural 1:1 glucose:fructose) with dextrose (pure glucose). Per scoop: ~13 g sucrose + ~12 g dextrose + electrolytes. It's a moderate-intake formula — the 2:1 ratio is well-tested up to ~90 g/hr but not optimized for the 100+ g/hr targets that demand 1:0.8.

The newer High Carb formula uses dextrose + maltodextrin + fructose at 2:1, dosed at 90 g per scoop. It's the same formulation philosophy scaled up to compete with the high-carb premium tier (Maurten, SiS, Skratch Super High-Carb).

What they do well

Is Tailwind Nutrition actually worth it?

Tailwind is worth retail for its actual use case: long, moderate-intensity events where one-bottle simplicity is a real competitive advantage and where 50–60 g/hr is enough fuel. Ultrarunners, gravel cyclists, and bikepackers regularly cite it as their most-used drink for good reason — it does its job without complicating race-day nutrition logistics.

It's harder to defend at retail when the goal is high-carb absorption (>90 g/hr) — the 2:1 ratio is suboptimal compared to 1:0.8, and at that intake rate the dual-transporter literature points elsewhere. It's also harder to defend when DIY is on the table: the formula is mostly grocery-store sugar plus salt.
