Who is Science in Sport?

Science in Sport (SiS) is the British endurance-sports-nutrition brand most directly responsible for popularizing the 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose ratio. Their flagship Beta Fuel powder (post-2021 reformulation) is a research-paper-derived formula with a logo on the bag — the company itself describes the carbohydrate split openly, and the marketing leans on the O'Brien & Rowlands citations more than on proprietary claims.

Among the brands in this category, SiS is the most DIY-friendly by a wide margin. Maurten has the hydrogel. Skratch has Cluster Dextrin. Precision has the sweat test. SiS Beta Fuel is, more than anything else, a bag of matched-ratio sugars — and they tell you exactly what's in it.

What's their formulation philosophy?

Beta Fuel's post-2021 design is unusually pure: roughly 57% maltodextrin, 42% fructose, ~1% flavoring. No sucrose, no significant electrolytes (~4 mg sodium per 80 g serving), no proprietary blends. The deliberate stripping of electrolytes pairs Beta Fuel with SiS Go Hydro, which carries the sodium separately — the same fuel-and-hydration decoupling that Precision Fuel & Hydration uses.

The 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose ratio is exactly what O'Brien & Rowlands 2013 identified as the practical dual-transporter optimum at intake rates of 80 g/hr or higher. SiS was among the first mainstream brands to build a product specifically around it. The strict simplicity of the recipe is the entire pitch.

Mixed at SiS's recommended 500 ml, Beta Fuel sits at ~16% carb concentration — well above the conventional 6–8% sweet spot for gastric emptying. Without a hydrogel to encapsulate the carbs, the high concentration is the tradeoff for fuel density in a single bottle. Athletes who want faster gastric clearance can dilute to 750 ml (~10.7%) or 1000 ml (~8%); the ratio and oxidation math don't change.

SiS was the long-time fuel sponsor of Team Sky and INEOS Grenadiers; INEOS moved to Maurten from 2025. SiS continues to sponsor British endurance programs across cycling, running, and triathlon. The pro fuel is the same shelf product — there's no pro-only version of Beta Fuel, which fits the brand's research-transparency identity.

Is Science in Sport actually worth it?

SiS is the easiest premium brand to recommend at retail price. The macros land where the research points (1:0.8 at 80 g/serving), the sodium-decoupling is the right design for athletes who tune electrolytes separately, and at $2.70 per serving Beta Fuel is the cheapest of the 1:0.8 premiums. For race-day convenience, sachet logistics, or a preference for a branded fuel, Beta Fuel is a sane choice.
