Who is Skratch Labs?

Skratch Labs was co-founded in Boulder in 2012 by Allen Lim — a sports physiologist who had been hand-mixing electrolyte drinks for the Garmin and RadioShack pro cycling teams — and chef Biju Thomas. The original Sport Hydration mix was deliberately the opposite of the high-carb premium products: ~20 g of carbs per scoop, a mix of cane sugar and dextrose, plus moderate sodium — designed for the all-day rider who wants a drink that tastes like real fruit, not a chemistry experiment.

More recently, Skratch added Super High-Carb to the line — a 100 g-per-scoop product built around Cluster Dextrin (HBCD), a branched cyclic glucose polymer with extraordinarily low osmolality. That product targets the elite carb-intake market (100+ g/hr) and represents Skratch's bet that ultra-low osmolality matters more at high concentrations than the 1:0.8 dual-transporter optimization Maurten and SiS chose.

What's their formulation philosophy?

Sport Hydration is the brand's identity. Real-fruit flavor (lemon, raspberry, etc., from actual fruit powder), moderate carbohydrate dose, sane sodium, and zero artificial sweeteners. The sugars are sucrose and dextrose — chemically a coupled glucose+fructose blend at roughly a 1:1 ratio, since sucrose splits 50/50 and the added dextrose is a small share of total carbs. It's the most palatable drink in the category for athletes who hate the cloying sweetness of premium fuels.

Super High-Carb is a different philosophy. The 12:1 glucose-to-fructose ratio (Cluster Dextrin + a touch of fructose) bets that HBCD's ultra-low osmolality lets a 12% carb solution clear the stomach without GI distress, even though the dual-transporter math is suboptimal. The chemistry is well-documented — HBCD's low osmolality clears the stomach at concentrations conventional carbs can't, the 12:1 ratio is unconventional in this category, and the $5.24 retail per 100 g serving reflects bulk HBCD's ingredient cost.

What they do well

  • Real-fruit flavor is better than the synthetic alternatives in this category. Some athletes can drink Skratch for hours where Maurten or SiS becomes intolerable.
  • Sport Hydration's moderate carb dose (20 g/scoop) is honest about who it's for — all-day moderate intensity, not race-day peak fueling.
  • Super High-Carb's HBCD bet is mechanistically defensible at very high concentrations.
  • Brand voice is unusually transparent — Allen Lim's writing on the company blog frequently goes deeper into the formulation logic than competitors do.
  • Sane electrolyte design across the line — sodium doses match real sweat losses for the use cases the products target.

Where they're overpriced

  • Sport Hydration retails ~$1.00 per 20 g scoop — cane sugar plus dextrose plus electrolytes. Bulk replication costs under 25 cents.
  • Super High-Carb is one Skratch product where DIY doesn't actually beat retail — bulk HBCD at canonical specialty pricing ($0.07/g per ingredient-sources.json) runs ~$6.40 per matched 100 g serving, more than Skratch's $5.24. A maltodextrin substitute is much cheaper (~$1/serving) but is a different drink — the low-osmolality chemistry is the entire reason to pay for HBCD.
  • The 12:1 ratio of Super High-Carb leaves dual-transporter capacity on the table at the high intakes the product is marketed for. A 1:0.8 mix at the same total carb dose is more directly supported by the literature.

Pro & elite adoption

Skratch is widely used in pro cycling at the moderate-carb tier (Sport Hydration as a daily training drink) and across ultra-running. Adoption of Super High-Carb is growing among riders specifically seeking the HBCD-low-osmolality story, but the product is younger than the Maurten / SiS hydrogel/dual-transporter ecosystem.

Is Skratch Labs actually worth it?

Sport Hydration is one of the cleanest moderate-carb drinks on the market. If you train all day at conversational intensity and want a real-fruit-flavored drink that won't make you queasy by hour four, it's the right product. DIY is straightforward — sucrose + dextrose + sodium + a bit of citric acid + lemon peel — and lands at ~25 cents per serving versus $1.00 retail.

Super High-Carb is the more interesting bet. If you've personally GI'd out on conventional sugar drinks at >100 g/hr and want the lowest-osmolality option available, HBCD is doing real work. But the per-serving price is steep, the 12:1 ratio is suboptimal at very high intakes, and the DIY math is unusual for Carb Hack — a faithful HBCD copy isn't cheaper than retail at canonical specialty pricing, and the only cheap path swaps maltodextrin in and loses the low-osmolality chemistry.
